With our energy and water sources depleting, people have begun to sit up and take notice. There are things that we can do to preserve our environment, and where we live. I am going to show you how to make your properties into eco friendly homes. This will be simple fixes to make, some which can be more expensive than others, but all designed to save water and electricity.
The first step is determining how old your windows are in your home. If they are very old, they will need replacing with double glazed windows, which are energy efficient. They keep the heat and the air conditioning in the home. This can be costly, but think about all the money in electricity you will be saving by installing these kind of windows.
Anytime you go into a room and it is either too cold or hot, odds are there is not enough insulation in the walls and attic. That would be the time to call the professionals out to replace the insulation in those places. Once this is done you will notice a difference almost immediately. The heat or cold stays in the room instead of going up and out the roof.
Everything you have done up to this point has been done to save on electricity. Now let us talk about solar panels. Solar panels are installed on top of your roof where they collect the suns rays. The rays are then changed into electricity to use in your home. It is a wonderful invention. Some research needs to be done and you will need a contractor to place them on the roof and explain how much electricity you can expect to save.
When you think about all the appliances you currently have in your home, they are probably not energy efficient. You can potentially save as much as 40 percent of electricity to run your new upgraded appliances. If you choose to purchase those now, you should include a washer and dryer, dishwasher and refrigerator. You may want to replace your hot water heater as well.
One very small change would be to purchase and place in new energy efficient light bulbs. Place these in every lamp in your home. They come in the same watts and sizes of regular light bulbs. They also have the tube lights that are used in some kitchens and in the garage or workshop. It is said that these kind of bulbs consume about five times less energy than a regular bulb. Think about how much savings that would be over the next five years.
To save even more in your every day life turning off the faucet while cleaning your teeth, turning off lights as you exit a room. Installing low water toilets in all the bathrooms of your home. Using the toaster oven as opposed to the large oven. Large ovens can use a lot of electricity, toaster ovens use about one third of that. Unplug small appliances on your kitchen counter, as they still use electricity when plugged in.
Now that you have the information you might want to start on the smallest project just to get you going. It is all about saving electricity and water. The efficient appliances alone will pay for themselves over time. If money is an issue then do whatever you can first. Eventually all of your home will be eco friendly. When it comes to the solar panels you may want to research those to find the best deal before purchasing.
